FAQ’s

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions we get about Surrey Minor Ball Hockey

Q- How long will online registration be open for?

A- You can register until Feb 6th/2010. After this, there will be a $10 late fee added to all registrations, and you will not be guaranteed to play. If you do not end up playing, you will get a refund for the registration.

Q- Is the online registration safe and secure?

A- Yes, we use a third party company called Wufoo, to gather the data and you can learn more about the security measures used for the system at their website - http://wufoo.com/security/#p4.  The data we received is stored securely and used only for the purposes of registering the players and ensure we have the necessary contact information to contact the parents during the season and for emergencies.

Q- How many games are there in a season?

A- There are between 13-16 games per season (Plus Playoffs) depending on the floor time we are able to get.

Q- How many practices are there in a season?

A- There can be as many as 6, but most will get 2-4 per season. The reason for this is again the lack of floor time available. Some coaches will try to get extra practice time by renting a school gym or lacrosse box, but this is up to the individual Coaches.

Q- What days are the games and practices on?

A- Usually, there are 2 games a week,  one game during the week and one on the weekend, but some times there are 3 games a week. Practices can be any day of the week, depending on schedule.

Q- Where are the games played?

A- There are 3 locations in Surrey. North Surrey arena (Whalley), Newton Arena (Newton), and Cloverdale arena (Cloverdale). There will be some “Away” games, but very few. The amount depends on the Division, but normally there are 2 “Away” games. One in Richmond, One in Metro (Burnaby), but these are generally on the weekends.

Q-What equipment will I need?

A- ALL players will need A CSA approved helmet with fill face protection, Shin Pads (We recommend D Gels),  a protective cup, Hockey gloves, hockey stick, and runners. All of this can be found at “The Hockey Shop  and “Cycone Talor sports”. If you buy Hard shin pads, make sure you get extra long socks that will be able to cover them as you will not be allowed to play with hard shin pads. The best ones are D Gels followed by soft soccer style pads.

Q- Do Goalies need to supply their own gear?

A- No, Surrey Minor will supply all the gear needed of the Goalies. If you have your own goalie gear, please use it as we do sometimes run short on gear depending on how many teams we have that year. For sanitary reasons, we DO NOT supply Athletic Cups (Jocks), these must be supplied by the player.

Q- When does the season start and end?

A- The season will start sometime in early April and runs through until Mid June. Playoffs rund Mid June thru until late June.

Q- Are there any all Girls Teams?

A- No, This is a Co-Ed league and all players are treated equal and play together.

Q- Can Friends play together?

A- You can request for kids to play together, but we cannot promise that this will happen. We do make sure that if siblings are in the same division, that they will be on the same team.

Q- Can I request that my child play for a specific coach?

A- Yes you can, we will try to have your child play for a requested coach, but because we do a “Draft” we cannot guarantee that it will happen.

Q- How are teams chosen?

A- We do a draft in ALL levels with the exception of Tyke. The Draft is based on player ratings. Players that have played before, will have a rating between 1-30, those who are new to ball hockey will need to come out to an evaluation night to be evaluated and given a rating.

Q- How many players are on a team?

A- Depending on the level, usually 15-17 players per team. Usually there are more players on the older teams because some of them work and can’t make it to every game.

Q- Do Goalies need to have their own equipment?

A- No, we supply the goalie equipment for the goalies, but we do ask that if you have your own to please use it so that we can make sure that all goalies have the equipment they need.

Q- I can’t commit to coaching full time, I would like to help out, is there any way I can?

A- Yes. We can pair you up with a Co-Head Coach or you can be an Assistant Coach.
